Story
Going over the course of nearly two years from a strictly "shorts and t-shirt, flat bar road bike to work" start to a slick and svelte Lycra-clad god of the road, one thing that has remained constant is the ever-looming threat of motorists.
We are taking part in the fundraising challenge leading up to the Wiggle Amy’s Gran Fondo event on 17 September to help the Amy Gillett Foundation raise at least $100,000 to invest in educational program initiatives to create a safer environment for riding.
Any contribution you can make will help the AGF achieve its vision of zero bike rider fatalities, i.e. stop me from being killed by a driver while I try to stop myself being killed by a heart attack.
If you or anyone you know rides a bike on the roads, this is a worthwhile charity to support. So worthwhile that I have given up drinking and been on a diet for the last six weeks so that I might actually finish within the cut-off time.
As an incentive, if I (Peter) raise $250 or more by Friday afternoon, I will shave my legs for the occasion, and upload video to YouTube for the benefit of my supporters.
Amy Gillett Foundation
The Amy Gillett Foundation (AGF) began its work in 2006 in the name of Amy Gillett, who was tragically killed as a result of being hit by a motorist whilst cycling with the Australian Women’s Road cycling team in Germany in 2005.
The Amy Gillett Foundation's vision is for safe bicycling throughout Australia in order to achieve the ultimate target of zero bicycling fatalities.
The Foundation promotes a safe and harmonious relationship of shared respect between bicyclists and motorists – to highlight the importance of being responsible every time we head out on the road whether we're on two wheels or on four. Why? Because everyone deserves to arrive at their destination safely irrespective of their chosen mode of transport.
